Where Do Motorcycles Come From?

While it may seem like they've been around forever, motorcycles really have only been around since the later half of the 1800s. In fact, they evolved alongside many of the mechanical advancements of that era. Their birth and evolution help tell us a little bit about the American cultural phenomenon that developed around these two-wheeled beauties.

They're called bikes in common vernacular, and it's true that motorcycles descended from what was called safety bicycles at the time. Their invention seems to have been something that can't really be traced to one person or area in particular, but, rather, an idea that was popping up all over Europe somewhat simultaneously. For most of their early history, they were more like what we think of as mopeds now, complete with pedals for human powered locomotion.

In France in the 1860's, they were driven by a steam-powered engine. Their design was that funny "velocipede" with the giant front wheel and the small back wheel. After about twenty years of experimentation with design around Europe, the fascination spread to the USA. During this time, designs began to incorporate the internal combustion engine, a new technology that was just gaining traction.

In 1896, a British company began selling motorcycles to the public, and two years later, in 1898, an American company based in Waltham, Massachusetts began doing the same. Most of the designs during this time featured an internal combustion engine incorporated into a bicycle. Many of the biggest names today in Europe and America came into being during this time period.

The bikes were utilized during World War I as a way to send messages to the front lines. Horses had previously been used to carry out this mission, but the motorized vehicle was a faster, smaller, safer mode of transport. This is when the pedals began to disappear from the designs, and the first true motorcycles appeared. They were an effective way of quickly getting from one place to another, and after the war, they continued to gain favor for these reasons. Further, they were an inexpensive way to get around, especially if you didn't have a family you needed to tote around. Thus, the brooding, loner hero riding across the US on his bike was born.

It was after World War II that the idea of belonging to a club became really important to many riders. Through the 50s and 60s, these clubs grew in participation and cultural relevance. The image of the biker gained a permanent foothold as an American icon. By the 1970s, the clubs began lobbying for bikers' rights. However, some of this power was lost when the RICO act targeted many "outlaw" gangs.

Today, motorcycles have spread all over the world. In the US, they're used as a mode of transportation for city dwellers who don't want to pay for parking, for those who want to travel cross country, and for those who love belonging to a special club. There's no question as to the importance of these vehicles in history or in culture, and their evolution helps to tell us how this came to be.

Pump Up Your Ride by Using Different Car Accessories

Cars are essentials to our daily lives; more so for people who have to travel to work. As cars are part of our daily lives, it can be tiresome to look at the same interior decor especially if one is stuck in traffic. That said, there are different car accessories that car owners can choose from to help them personalize their car's interior and exterior. An added bonus to making the car look aesthetically pleasing is that it can also add to the car's value as some of these accessories help protect from wear and tear. Below are just some accessories to help car owners prolong their vehicle's life as well as improve their daily commute.
Interior Accessories
Interior accessories are important as these help support the inside of the car and prolong its lifespan. Examples of interior accessories include seat covers to protect the seats from accidental spills and car mats to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating. Car owners can just remove the covers without having to worry about stains in the seats. Mats are also easier to clean or replace when the time comes.
Steering wheel covers are also a necessity for people who have less gripping power as they can grip the wheel without having to worry about slipping. Some covers also have heating features making it ideal for winter driving. Sun shade covers are another must-have. As the sun's rays can blind a person, having a shade cover protects the person not only from the heat but also from being blinded by the sun while driving. Car owners have the option to choose from plastic screens to mattes to customized ones. Other interior accessories that you can add include TV screens for your passenger's entertainment. You can also add up other technology features to your car including Bluetooth and GPRS tracking system.
Exterior Accessories
As the exterior area is more prone to damage, care should also be given. Car covers not only protect the car from dirt, snow and grime, it also protects the car from scratches and other wear and tear conditions. Covers can be water-resistant, water proof or non-water resistant. Opt for covers that are breathable and fit best as a tight covering can cause scratches to the car.
Adding a rack at the back for bicycles, ski boards or surfboards also protects the car from scrapes and grazes. A rooftop luggage container is also essential for owners who like to travel and need more room space. The container not only holds the luggage securely, it also prevents the roof from being deformed.
Adding car accessories to your vehicle has its advantages; however some may be the cause of distraction and as such it is important to weigh one's needs against safety and avoid those that would just create diversions for the car driver. Have a Smooth Driving Experience

Do You have a Power Booster With Your Car ? Do You know your Car Condition ?
It is the desire of everyone to keep his/her car in a perfect condition for a long period of time and for that you have to ensure an appropriate maintenance of it. A good condition of a car depends a lot on the exhaust system and this is why it is really very necessary to ensure a proper servicing of it. The condition of a car can be understood from the sound that it generates and the proper health of the exhaust system ensures it. The fume that is blown out from the cabin, also depends on the exhaust system. To make your car efficient in mileage and to make it least responsible for creating pollution, it should have a periodical maintenance.
Various methods are there to ensure whether the exhaust system of your car is in some kind of trouble or not. From the sound of your car, it becomes clear. If your car gives out a periodical vibration that is caused by some strange friction, its exhaust system is definitely having some problem. A fast identification of this problem can save you from spending a huge amount behind your car.
Very often, you may feel that your car is vibrating in a strange manner. It may also lose its power with the passage of time. If you find your car in such states, you need to visit a mechanic. A leakage in the exhaust can cause this and this is why the rough vibration is felt whenever you touch the steering. This leads to a quick repair of the engine and a quick solution can be provided with the filling of your tank. But if you ignore the maintenance, you would need to refill the tank more often. The leakage in the exhaust causes the engine to work harder and this is why you experience more fuel consumption.
All these problems in your car can find a solution in the servicing of the exhaust system. To get the solution, you should contact a professional mechanic who is engaged in the tasks like exhaust repairs, standard exhaust replacement, custom exhaust work, replacements of headers and catalytic converter etc. To ensure a perfect condition of your car, a proper maintenance of all these parts is required.
After having all these maintenance done in a proper way, you can have your car in a completely new condition. But to ensure that, you need to look for an experienced professional. You have to check various things before you hand your car over to someone.

Why Fog Lights Are Important for A Car

Lighting plays a vital role in extreme weather conditions and every light installed in your vehicle has a function to perform. The aftermarket headlights that you install to get rid of the stock lights still lack vital aspects and are seldom useful when there is snow and fog around. Fog lights are available for cars and you can install them in your car to ensure safe journey in the worst of weather conditions.
You may ask yourself a question that why normal lights do not perform well in the fog. You need a light with longer wavelength to penetrate the fog. Headlights are made for normal circumstances and their light is of shorter wavelength and cannot penetrate the fog easily. Yellow or red light s used in the fog lights as these have longer wavelengths than traditional headlights and tail lights. These throw an intense beam to penetrate the fog and make it easier for the driver to see what is ahead.
You may find fog lights in the market in various colors but the clear color is the most used. yellow color is also preferred by some drivers because of its cool looks. You may also consider the type of light to install in your car and it will depend on your budget too. Halogen bulbs have been in use for many years but the Xenon bulb have replaced them as they are three times brighter than Halogen lights. If you experience a lot of snow and fog in your area then Xenon fog lights will be the better option for you.
Most of the cars come with factory fitted lights of this kind but if your car does not have them then you can buy aftermarket lights. Even if your car comes with fog light system then you may want to change them as they are not of good quality. Every vehicle should have them installed at the front and these increase the style of your car too. You can install them on the bumper of your car and when lit, these will give your car a sporty look.
Fog lights are also installed at the rear end of a car but they are optional. They are mostly used to indicate the cars coming behind that the visibility is not clear ahead. But you should take extra care before switching on the rear fog lights accidentally as the cars coming behind may stop suddenly and it may cause an accident. When you see that the visibility has improved and you no longer need them then you should switch them off immediately.
These lights come in various shapes, designs and colors and are easy to install as well. You should consider the design and style of your car too before purchasing a set of lights of certain design and color. A branded set of fog lights may cost you more but it is worth spending as these lights last long and will ensure that your journey is safe.

Things to know about accidents involving self-driving cars

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A small fleet of self-driving cars is maneuvering through traffic in California using an array of sensors and computing power. Drivers are required to be along for the ride, but much of the time, they keep their hands off the steering wheel and brake and gas pedals.
Here are some things to know about these cars of the future:
THE ACCIDENTS
Since September, the seven companies permitted to test the cars on public roads have been required to report any collisions to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. A total of 48 cars have permits. In response to questions from The Associated Press, the state said four accidents have been reported since September. Google Inc. then said Monday that its cars had been hit 11 times since 2009. Over those six years, they traveled about 1 million miles with the car driving, and 1.7 million miles total.
___
THE COMPANIES
The companies rolling with the most cars are not traditional automakers — they're run by by Silicon Valley billionaires.
According to the DMV, Google has permits for 23 Lexus SUVs, while electric car maker Tesla Motors has 12 vehicles. Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan have three vehicles each; parts suppliers Bosch and Delphi each have two.
___
THE HUMANS
The DMV is still drafting rules for when the general public can get behind these wheels. Google executives said their timeframe is the next few years, but others say it will take decades before truly self-driving cars proliferate.
For now, the DMV has licensed 255 people to sit behind the wheels during this testing phase.
Google has the most what it calls "safety drivers," with 159, the DMV said. The agency said Audi has 30 licensed drivers, but the automaker said it has 27. Nissan has 17; Tesla 16; Bosch 12; Mercedes-Benz 12 and Delphi nine.
___
THE DRIVING
Google was driving its cars on public roads before California passed a law regulating testing. "Since the start of our program 6 years ago, we've driven more than 700,000 miles autonomously, on both freeways and city streets, without causing a single accident," spokeswoman Katelin Jabbari said. Google said later Monday that its updated total was closer to 1 million self-driving miles. Google also said its cars have traveled "the equivalent of over 15 years of typical human driving" since September. That would be about 140,000 miles.
The other companies wouldn't say how many miles their test cars have driven since September.
___
OTHER STATES
Nevada, Michigan and Florida also have passed laws permitting self-driving cars on their roads, and regulators there said they were not aware of any self-driving car accidents since then. Because other states have not expressly outlawed the cars, companies may test elsewhere — though the four states with rules have just about every driving condition and terrain.

Are you checking your tires every day? Want to know how To Keep Your Tyres Safe ?

Thousands of accidents a year on Britain's roads could be prevented if the minimum tyre tread depth is increased by 1.4mm, according to the shock findings of an Auto Express investigation. In the first study of its kind, we compared how much more quickly a car fitted with tyres that have 3mm of tread left on can halt from 70mph in the wet, as opposed to when the rubber is on the 1.6mm legal limit.

Our test involved performing an emergency stop while driving along a soaked tarmac test track. The results (see box) are horrifying, and show that the state of your car's tyres can mean the difference between avoiding an obstacle or hitting it at 50mph.

It's all down to the fact that braking performance in the wet drops off significantly once the tyre's tread level falls below 3mm. We found it can take a staggering 44 metres - about 10 car lengths - more for a motor to stop at motorway speeds in the rain if its rubber is on the legal limit.

Worryingly, there are plenty of vehicles on our roads that have less than 3mm of tread. We randomly checked 100, and found 67 had at least one tyre that was below this safety threshold. It's little wonder, then, that Government statistics show one-fifth of the 98,845 serious injuries and fatalities resulting from motoring accidents in wet conditions during 2004 involved cars skidding.

Obviously, if the legal limit was increased, we'd all have to replace our rubber more regularly. But according to one leading tyre maker, this would add only £20 a year to the cost of motoring for the average driver. That's just 39p per week, and a small price to pay to improve road safety.

You could argue the minimum depth should be even higher, as the more tread the better. However, in 2003 an independent study by motoring research centre MIRA showed that around 3mm was the critical depth. Tests were carried out while driving at 50mph, but until now no research has been done at motorway speeds.

So, to corroborate this previous evidence, we also brake tested a Ford Focus on tyres with 5mm of tread. On average, it took 82 metres to come to a halt - nine metres sooner than when fitted with 3mm rubber. However, with the tyres on the legal limit, the stopping distance increased significantly to a scary 135m.
